Windels Marx is a full service law firm headquartered in New York City, with offices in New Brunswick and Madison, New Jersey, and Stamford, Connecticut. The Firm has approximately 135 attorneys and provides services in 18 practice areas, the largest of which by volume of business are financial transactions, real estate, litigation, and bankruptcy. The Firm serves approximately 8,000 domestic and foreign clients, including banks and finance companies, insurance companies, manufacturers, non-profit entities, and government sponsored enterprises. The New York Law Journal listed Windels Marx in its annual survey "NYLJ 100: Largest Private Law Offices" (June 4, 2012).
HISTORY OF THE FIRM
With a legacy dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, Windels Marx has been an integral part of the formative events of the practice of law in New York, with founding members and officers of the New York State Bar Association and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and of American corporate history. Indeed, the Firm represented Thomas Edison in litigation which confirmed his claim to be the inventor of the incandescent electric light in the late 1800s and was responsible for incorporating IBM in the early 1900s. More recently, our attorneys have been selected to fill prestigious posts in government and in the legal profession. Several have been appointed to the judiciary, including the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and federal district courts.
Over the decades, mergers with other law firms have led to expansion, both in size and scope of practice. The most recent merger, between Windels, Marx, Davies & Ives and Lane & Mittendorf, LLP, brought together two established firms, thereby creating a practice encompassing a greater depth of experience and an increased ability to handle more sophisticated transactions, as well as a growing client base. Our already strong New Jersey practice was enhanced by the addition of seven partners from the highly regarded, former Princeton law firm, Jamieson Moore Peskin & Spicer. These attorneys brought to Windels Marx sophisticated practices in complex insurance litigation, government relations and lobbying, environmental, corporate, securities, and banking transactions. More recent additions include bankruptcy trustees, practitioners in real estate tax certiorari, and mortgage and tax lien litigators.
SCOPE OF SERVICE
At Windels Marx, we pride ourselves on our ability to offer sophisticated legal services on a par with much larger general practice firms, while simultaneously offering the kind of focus expected of smaller, boutique firms. Our skill and experience mean that we are equally at ease handling multi-million dollar corporate acquisitions and the latest e-commerce ventures.
Our Firm operates efficiently and effectively in both the domestic and the international arenas. Our attorneys work closely with business executives, government officials, in-house counsel, public interest groups, and other participants in the legal process to accomplish our clients' objectives. The representation we provide covers the full spectrum of our clients' legal needs within their financial expectations. The Firm is committed to providing high quality work and exceptional responsiveness to clients in an environment that is increasingly cost-sensitive.
The Firm offers significant capabilities in commercial law, mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures, as well as in securities, insurance, environmental, trademark, and bankruptcy law. A sophisticated banking and financial institutions practice includes proficiency in transactional lending, debt restructuring, and public finance including structuring financing transactions for hospitals, healthcare systems, and physician groups in connection with loans and tax-exempt financings for major construction and renovation projects, mergers, acquisitions, refinancings, and restructurings. The Firm represents over 100 financial institutions in connection with loan origination, syndication, trading, and workout activities. Our international practice encompasses large foreign corporations and individuals with business interests in the United States and abroad.
Our full-service litigation department is experienced at resolving corporate and commercial, banking, fraud, employment and discrimination, and insurance disputes, as well as white collar crime defense. And the Firm's active bankruptcy and creditors' rights practice has experience in bankruptcy litigation, resolution of complex creditor-debtor disputes, and as bankruptcy trustees. Within our mortgage and tax lien foreclosure practice attorneys have extensive experience representing servicing agents for a series of trusts annually purchasing tax liens in bulk from New York City, and tax lien servicers and investors. We have represented a variety of lenders, financial institutions, servicers, individuals and title companies in foreclosures, real estate, and title based proceedings and transactions.
The Firm's sophisticated real estate department has significant experience in every phase of real estate investment, development, financing, leasing, workouts, and related areas. Our health law attorneys handle legal and regulatory matters unique to the healthcare industry, representing hospitals and other healthcare providers in connection with state and federal tax matters, licensing, certificates of need, affiliation arrangements, managed care contracting, corporate compliance plans, governmental regulation and investigations, employment agreements, vendor contracting, and clinical trial agreements. Other practice areas include corporate and individual tax, trusts and estates, governmental relations, administrative agency practice, and municipal and public finance.
While we enjoy a strong regional presence, along with our historically national client base and a long-standing international practice, we have resisted the trend to merge into mega-law firms and thereby lose our personal style. To best serve the cross-border interests of our clients, as well as their special localized needs within our borders, we've developed alliances with law firms and legal networks throughout the United States and around the world.
