The Question of Quality and Cost

While professional quality remains the primary concern in choosing a law firm, there is a recognition that the concept of “spare no expense” does not ensure quality of product or performance. The notion that cost alone is the best measure of how a law firm will perform has been replaced by the careful scrutiny of legal charges and a more businesslike attitude that requires attorneys to provide realistic projections of legal costs and a close accounting of how time is spent.

This new reality has not surprised us. We have always addressed these issues frankly with clients because they are important to building a successful attorney-client relationship based on trust and mutual understanding.

At the same time, we are aware that there is a clear willingness on the part of clients to consider a variety of non-traditional fee arrangements with law firms. We have followed these developments closely and have employed new types of billing structures that meet the changing needs of clients.

We are never, of course, reluctant to ask for and use all the resources a matter demands, but our firm is structured to staff each case with as few lawyers as possible. In fact, we have always approached our practice from the perspective that the discipline of the pocketbook can lead to speedier and more productive solutions.
